Over V’Shav – Session 17 recording – Testimony

In our last session, we heard the testimony of Lynn Halamish. Lynn’s son was killed 31 years ago in the Lebanon war, and today – together with her husband Asaph – she leads a therapy group of bereaved couples, whose sons were killed in Gaza. So comforting to hear how God uses our tears and suffering to heal others, providing we let suffering work its purposes in us.
Some verses that comfort me this morning – Isa. 12:1-2.

I praise you, Lord. Although you were angry with me and with my nation, your anger is turning away and you are comforting me, us. Surely God is our salvation; We will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord Himself, is our strength and defense. He IS becoming our salvation.

Here is the recording of the session.

  1. from Bethyl Joy. I read this after the conversation with Lynn and it resonated with me:

“I believe that only people who have suffered in some way can save one another. Deep communion and dear compassion are formed much more by shared pain than by shared pleasure. I do not know why that is true. We’re not saved by any formulas or theologies or any priesthood extraneous to the human journey itself. Jesus says to Peter, “You must be ground like wheat, and once you have recovered, then you can turn and help the brothers” (Luke 22:31–32). [1]

Your wounds are hard at work making their sacred medicine in the hidden spaces below the scars. With loss, there may be nothing satisfying for you to reclaim. If a special person has died, or love went away, what we yearn for most is an impossible return. The sacred task at hand is to let yourself be reclaimed by something deeper than the immediacy of struggle and pain. This something need not be identified or fixated upon, but surrendered to.” Quoted from Fr. Richard Rohr in his meditations.
